Preparing your home for sale can be a little daunting. There are, of course, the obvious tasks such as fixing the cracked window from your son's BB gun, painting over the happy face drawn in red marker by your daughter, or replacing baseboards the puppy chewed (oddly, all real examples from my life). What's next? There are always plenty of things that could be done to make your home more appealing, but the number one investment you can make is a fresh coat of neutral interior paint. The majority of home buyers want to purchase a home that can be described as "move-in ready". As buyers are looking online or in person, they are contemplating how much they will have to do before they can comfortably move in and make it their own; which means that the bright pink walls you painted for your preschooler, or the sports team wallpaper you used in your office, will be a liability rather than a selling point.

Painting the interior of your home in a neutral color does not necessarily mean bright white. When choosing which of the basic neutral colors (shades of black, white, gray, tan and brown) to use, you will also need to consider the flooring, cabinets, and countertops. One easy way to do this is to gather some paint chip sample cards from a local hardware store and compare them to the other features of your home that won't be changed. Granite countertops in shades of black and tan, with honey oak cabinets and cream tile will look their best with creamy white or greige walls rather than bright white or pure gray. A color that pulls together and complements the various shades and textures of the home can help de-emphasize dated or other features a potential buyer may consider less desirable.
If you're planning to have your home professionally staged, this is the time to call in the experts. Before you paint, ask your home stager for a consultation to help you pick the right shade and to go over any other improvements you can make in the weeks prior to listing your home for sale that will get you the best result possible. When done correctly, even minor improvements can result in a major increase in selling price, making those targeted improvements well worth your time and effort.
